8 Definitions of “Life” (5 Scientific and 3 Philosophical).

Although “life” is hard to define, there is a common consensus around some characteristics attributed to the word. Well, for something to have life a scientist would say that it must have the ability to:

  • Move.
  • Metabolize.
  • Reproduce.
  • Grow.
  • Learn.

A philosopher may come along and say that advanced machines could potentially do everything that plants and animals do. But most likely, machines will never have these characteristics of life found in humans alone, namely:

  • Self.
  • Volition.
  • Introspection.
