Why do some Muslims find violence towards Christians (and supposed “Christian nations”) theologically justified?
- “The Verse of the Sword” (Sura 9:5) says to slay, besiege, and ambush Christians who don’t convert to Islam.
- Later Suras supersede prior Suras in what is known as the “doctrine of abrogation” (Sura 2:106) .
- Chapter 9 (At-Taubah), where the “verse of the sword” is located, is chronologically the second to last chapter written in the Qur’an.
Therefore, it is theologically sound in Islam to carry out violence on Christians (or as those who believe in the Trinity are called, “polytheists”).
